Weymouth Carnival King : Ben Powell

Tonight at the Wessex Stadium saw a bit of speedway tradition restored for Wildcat fans with the return of both the ‘Summer Four Team Tournament’ and the ‘Carnival King Trophy’ a final heat decider for the night’s top scorers from each team.

The first three heats were won from the gate by what was looking to be a very powerful Exeter side. Heat four seemed like it would last all night after three restarts but at the fourth attempt with just two riders left Mark Jones took the chequered flag. Heat five saw the return of Exeter to winning ways with Lee Smethills claiming his second win of the night. Jordon Frampton was excluded from heat six after falling on turn three whilst leading causing two of the following riders to lay their bikes down. Danny Warwick took full advantage of the restart to claim the first win of the night for the Wildcats.

Heat eight was the race of the night between David Mason and Ben Powell. Mason was all over the back of Powell after being beaten out of turn two despite making the gate, finally managing to get around him with a blast of speed on the last lap out of turn two down the back straight, claiming the Wildcats second win in three heats.

Mason was again in action in heat twelve, gating well with Roynon chasing him hard and nearly managing to beat him with a late charge out of turn four to the chequered flag. George Piper bit the dust in turn one of heat fourteen after a tight first bend saw him get pushed wide but he picked himself up and jumped back on the bike for the restart. Powell took the chequered flag on the restart to extend Exeter’s now unassailable lead. The so far unbeaten Smethills led heat 16 until a fall on lap 3 with the race being stopped and the win awarded to Mason for the Wildcats.

The Carnival King was decided between Mason, Filmer, Powell and Jones. Filmer fell on turn one but quickly cleared the track to allow Ben Powell to go on and claim his crown.
